What to Pack for a Joshua Tree RV Trip
A practical checklist for park days and time at your campsite
A useful Joshua Tree RV packing list covers two parts of the trip: time exploring the park and time enjoying your campsite. At Desert Drifter RV Resort in Yucca Valley, you can prepare for both without filling every storage compartment.
Pack by activity, check the forecast close to departure, and keep the first things you will need within easy reach.
Put the park day essentials in one bag
Have a day bag ready before your first morning out. Include water for everyone, food, sun protection, sturdy closed-toe shoes, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight or headlamp. Even a short outing deserves its own supplies.
The National Park Service advises carrying at least one gallon of water per person per day. Plan your supply around the full outing, and bring extra for your vehicle. Read the park's current safety guidance before heading out.
- Refillable bottles and enough stored drinking water for the day
- Snacks and a lunch that travels well
- A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
- A map, charged phone, charging cable, and backup power
- A small first-aid kit and any personal essentials
Prepare for mornings and evenings
Check the forecast for both Yucca Valley and the part of Joshua Tree you plan to visit. Desert weather changes with the season and location; a sunny afternoon does not tell you what you will want after dark.
Bring layers you can combine, including a warm outer layer when the forecast calls for it. Pack comfortable clothes for your site as well as clothes for walking. For a planned stargazing outing, keep your evening layers in the vehicle rather than leaving them back at the resort.
Check your RV setup kit
Before departure, check the equipment you normally use for a full hookup stay. That may include your compatible electrical cord and protection equipment, drinking-water hose and fittings, sewer equipment, leveling supplies, and wheel chocks. Use your RV and equipment instructions to confirm what your setup requires.
Keep setup items separate from food and personal belongings. Store the pieces you will use first where you can reach them after parking. Review your exact site dimensions and electrical service on our RV sites page.
Pack for the time between outings
A swimsuit, swim towel, shower bag, laundry bag, and a little detergent are useful additions for a Desert Drifter stay. Add a book or a small game if you enjoy a quiet afternoon at your site or in a shared lounge.
For outdoor meals, start with a simple menu and the supplies you actually use. A reusable tablecloth, dish towels, and containers for leftovers can be more useful than another cooking gadget. Put loose outdoor items away before leaving your site.
Save your trip details before departure
Download park maps and directions for offline use, since cell service is limited or absent in many areas of Joshua Tree. Save your reservation confirmation and arrival instructions as well. Share your planned route and return time with someone you trust.
Give the forecast, park alerts, and your reservation details one final look before driving. Then use our before-you-arrive guide to get ready for your stay, or reserve your RV site.
